Are they thinking because they cant remember when they lost their cool or because they cant decide which time was the worst?People who are generally calm take less time to remember the situations when they werent calm because its weird for them when they lose it.If someone tells you that they dont lose cool, its time for a red alert. Never losing it is like a superpower. How come theyre not evaluating you instead?Pay attention to their explanations. Are they focusing on reasons for loosing cool, are they still surprised they acted the way they did or did they analyze the situation already and come up with the solutions?Did they learn from the situation? Do they make excuses for the loss of control or do they regret losing it? How determined are they not to lose it again?17. WHAT ARE THE 5 KEYS TO SUCCESS?This one is a simple test. Just count the words I and We in their answe rs.In other words, one of the keys they list should concern teamwork.Its an easy question to determine whether theyre team players or not and if they arent well bye, bye EQ.18. WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN?How much are their leisure activities oriented towards nurturing their psyche? Do they take time for themselves or do they enjoy group activities?Theres no right answer for this one. If theyre more introverted, they may have awesome analytical skills, but if theyre extroverted, they might have that subtle leadership magnetism that emotionally intelligent people often have.Actually, the introvert and extrovert categories got old so an ambivert might be the best candidate for the emotionally intelligent interviewee.Look for someone who values their alone time and knows how to listen and speak. Look for someone who knows how to lead and follow.That way youll be sure that the person in question took their time to understand and analyze their own and other p eoples emotions, motives, behavior, but that he/she also has people skills and field experience. CONCLUSIONIts not just what they say, but also how they say it that matters. Pay attention to the conjunctions such as: however, still, although, but, etc. These might imply detailed analysis and complexity of someones mind.Its all the nuances that they perceive (or that they fail to perceive) that give out their emotional intelligence.Watch out for body language and signs of short temper or resignation. Listen to their tone of voice. Are they easily excited?Dont be too rash in conclusions or otherwise, you wont turn out to be very emotionally intelligent. There are always more variables in human motivation and relationships than we can account for so keep your mind open for the possibilities you missed.Someone may lack a trait of an emotionally intelligent person but still have a high EQ.Thats why its important to go through all of these questions. Puck and Bottom The Artist as Interpreter in A Midsummer Nights Dream - Literature Essay Samples

When James Joyce was a teenager, a friend asked him if he had ever been in love. He answered, How would I write the most perfect love songs of our time if I were in love A poet must always write about a past or a future emotion, never about a present one A poets job is to write tragedies, not to be an actor in one (Ellman 62). I mention this because after replacing the word comedy for tragedy and allowing a little latitude on the meaning of the word actor Joyce is subconsciously giving A Midsummer Nights Dreams argument about the role of the artist. That is to say, an artist must be removed from the action, or, at least, not prone to normal temptations. This emotional distance gives the artist the type of perspective that Theseus likens to a madmans. It also, however, gives the artist a vantage point from which he can give the other characters experiences meaning. Therefore, I will argue that, in A Midsummer Nights Dream, Shakespeare sees the artist as someone who is remo ved from the plays main action, but gives meaning to the plays experience (for both the audience and the other characters). I will show this by examining the roles of the two counterpart artists: Bottom (who supercedes Peter Quince as Every Mothers Sons artist), and Puck (whose art is changing peoples hearts and minds). My first four paragraphs show how Shakespeare uses Puck and Bottom allegorically to represent two different components of the artistic mind. Secondly, I show how Shakespeare leaves them emotionally distant from the main action of the play. Lastly, I will show how they end up interpreting the play, thereby, giving it meaning.It is important to show that Puck and Bottom are very similar characters. I do not mean to suggest that they are interchangeable the way, for instance, Hermia and Helena are. Rather, Puck and Bottom are counterparts, with each representing a different component of the artistic mind. Shakespeare gives them enough similarities to draw attent ion to the fact that they share a common artistic bond. For example, they both use their art to serve rulers. Puck changes peoples hearts at Oberons bidding. Even when he acts on his own when he changes Bottom into an ass he ends up serving his masters purposes. Bottom uses his art to serve a ruler as well. He is single-minded in his commitment to perform in front of Theseus. In fact, he is so eager to entertain Theseus that he volunteers for every role in the play. By having Bottom and Puck both serve rulers, Shakespeare is highlighting the artistic relationship between the two characters.Another way Shakespeare links Puck and Bottom is through their differences. This sounds paradoxical, but it is not. Their differences are so pronounced that the audience cannot help but contrast them, therefore linking them in the audiences mind. For example, Shakespeare makes Puck full of mischief, and misanthropy (e.g. Oh what fools these mortals be). The name Robin Goodfellow was a popular name for the devil, which gives some indication of how he would have been received in Shakespeares time (Bloom 151). Bottom, on the other hand, is simple and friendly. His arrogance as an actor seems motivated more out of his passion to please Theseus than out of a self-congratulatory nature. The other mechanicals like him personally, and worry for him when he is missing. Moreover, he strikes up a friendship with Titanias child servants, although Titania was offering him more selfish pleasures. His name suggests the earth, or being firmly grounded (Bloom 152). This takes on special significance when contrasted to Puck, who, as a sprite, is associated with the air and sky.The reason that Shakespeare goes to such pains to link Bottom and Puck and I go to such pains to emphasize their relationship is because they represent two intrinsic parts of the artistic mind. Bottom represents a visceral approach to art. He objects to the portrayal of Pyramuss suicide, for fear that the women in the audience will be overwhelmed with grief. He becomes so emotionally attached to his art that he cannot understand the rational difference between art and reality.Puck, on the other hand, represents the art of the mind. By this I mean that his art takes place within the minds of other characters. His art has such a profound impact on the minds of Demetrius and Lysander that they renounce their only distinctive characteristic (their love for Helena). Pucks art not only manipulates the innermost beliefs of his subjects minds, it leaves them struggling to articulate their experience. In this way, Pucks art engages his subjects minds even after he is done with them. Even Bottoms mind otherwise inactive is left trying to make sense out of his experience:I have had a dream, past the wit of any man to say what dream it was .Methought I was and methought I had but man is but a patched fool if he will offer to say what methought I had. The eye of man hath not heard, the ear of man hath not seen, mans hand is not able to taste, his tongue to conceive, not his heart to report, what my dream was. I will get Peter Quince to write a ballad of this dream: it shall be called Bottoms Dream because it hath no bottom (IV.1.203-217)This is primarily a comical speech, but Bottom takes it very seriously. Pucks art has effected his mind in a very real way, and he struggles to make sense out of it. He finally labels a bottomless dream, which suggests that it was a passive, visceral experience. This is fitting for an artist who becomes emotionally attached to his art, but cannot think rationally about it. It is also a far cry from Puck an artist who deals with the mind, but seems unable to experience human emotions. For these reasons, I contend that Puck and Bottom represent two necessary, but opposite components of the artistic mind.If, as I have said, Puck and Bottom represent the role of the artist, it is important to discern exactly what Sha kespeare is trying to say about that role. Firstly, they are both emotionally distant from the main action of the play. I have said earlier that Bottom is an emotional character, and that is true inasmuch as he feels that art is a purely emotional experience. When it comes to his own actions, however, he remains oblivious to emotions of any kind. When the other mechanicals run away from him, leaving him stranded in the woods, he does nothing but sing silly songs. His composure comes across as somewhat shocking, considering that his friends have just run away screaming. It hints at an inability to feel the proper emotion for a serious time. The most striking example of Bottoms emotional detachment comes across in his relationship to Titania. Although he may have consummated his relationship with the beautiful fairy queen, it is fairly clear that he does not share her enthusiasm for the relationship. A good example of this comes in one of their early exchanges:Titania. Thou a rt wise as thou art beautiful.Bottom. Not so neither; but if I had wit enough to get out of this wood, I have enough to serve my own.Titania. Out of this wood do not desire to go;Thou shalt remain here, whether thou wilt or no.(3.1.147-153)Even after flattery (which, I assume, happens rarely for Bottom) she has to essentially threaten him to stay in the woods with her. What is the audience supposed to make of Bottoms lack of interest in Titania It becomes more complicated, considering the fact that he was anxious to star in a grand love story. By all accounts, it appears as though Bottom would rather play a lover, than actually be a lover. This is because he is an artist, and he has to distance himself from the action he is trying to portray. This emotional distance from love gives him the perspective he needs to portray love in the final act. In that way, Shakespeare is suggesting that the role of an artist should be distanced from the main action.Puck has a similar att itude of emotional detachment. This is not to say that he does not take pleasure in his work he has the same sort of maniacal love of mischief that Falstaff has for laziness only that he has no interest in his own product. The audience never sees him using his art to his own ends (with the exception of his turning Bottom into an ass). He appears to have no romantic desires at all, which is strange for a fairy whose art deals with love. Moreover, we know that fairies can experience such feelings. Titania and Oberon are in love, and their early banter indicates that they are rather lusty characters. Why does Shakespeare put a character without any romantic desire at the center of a play about romantic love I offer the same answer that I gave about Bottom Puck, unlike Titania and Oberon, is an artist and therefore has to distance himself emotionally. This emotional distance gives him a perspective where he can interpret the plays experience, and give it meaning. In this r espect, Shakespeare is again saying that an artist must be emotionally distant from the plays main action.The goal of emotional distance and, in fact, the goal of all art is to bring meaning to experience. In the final act, Puck and Bottom interpret the meaning of the play in different, but not opposing, ways. The mechanicals play represents the culmination of Bottoms art, and it is also the one area where the actions of the Athenians are given meaning. The play represents the ridiculousness of true love. Although the irony is lost on the Athenians and probably on the players themselves they have just undergone a ridiculous experience ending in true love. Even the language highlights the similarities between the play, and the Athenians experience. For example, when Bottom, as Pyramus, says:Sweet Moon, I thank thee for thy sunny beams;I thank thee, Moon, for shining now so brightFor thy gracious, golden glittering gleamsI trust to take of truest Thisby sight.(5.1.272-275)It seems characteristically ridiculous that Pyramus would put his trust in something as precarious as the moon. At the same time, it sounds remarkably similar to Hermias speech in the first act, where she swears her love to Lysander on Cupids strongest bow (1.1.169). While an actual thesis statement was lacking, or a title that would have provided similar direction, the content stayed close to the topics of striving for equality and cultural identity through the writings of Hughes. The prime element of this approach involves inclusive program of employee assistance and employees flexibility that assists in developing the adaptive, diverse and high performing workforce. These kinds of employees assist in meeting the existing and future needs of the organization. Leave options and voluntary lithe work provided by the organization may lead to reduced redundancy (Jiang et al., 2012). The organization may provide salary and wage according to the leave attended by the employees. Irrespective of strong culture in work life balance, some organizations inescapably need redundancy in workplace. However, the executive and high-level management has identified the benefit of work-life-balance strategi es and thus they have explored many new ways for balancing the work life and personal life of the employees minimizing the cost of the organization as well as redundancies. On the other hand, work-life-balance is related to provide effective working ways to the employees of all types of employees in terms of part time and full time. Frequent redundancies come in flexible working condition, natural attrition and redeployment when there is downturn in the organizations. In such cases, the employees have to stay sprightly in their working areas. In future days, the economy might pick up and the demand of the employees might be increased by increasing the urge of talent acquisition. According to Kehoe and Wright, (2013), the employees of the organization have concept that they have to work very hard in downturn situation. On the other hand, Armstrong, (2014) opined that overload in work may influence the employee engagement of the organization. This may in turn negatively affect the discretionary effort and productivity of the employees. The intension of organizations in getting more output from fewer employees may not always be effective and productive of the organization due to lack of engagement of the employees. According to Waiganjo et al., (2012), in order for increasing the sales volume and saving the cost of the organization towards increasing the profitability, it is expected that the employees would do according to needs of the organization for acquiring the set outcome. On the other hand, Nyberg et al., (2012) opined that forcing employees to do job as per the ser ways of organization may disengaged the employees and increases the time of required for actually completing the task. Unless and until the organization brings structural efficiencies in the workplace against the redundancy program, they may restrict themselves in getting more output from fewer employees. Therefore, it can be said that workplace flexibility has been moved away from its original paradigm that is foreseeable. Advantages and disadvantages are associated with it but if this situation is properly handled by the organization it may provide effective work-life-balance to the workforce. In order to complete the task and maintain their responsibility, employees work in different way in the organization. According to the requirement of the organization, excessive work of the organization can be categorized into different ways namely overtime, extended commute time, stretched hour per day and overtime hours. According to Al Ariss et al., (2014), excessive working hours may have negative influence on the employees and even the people associated with the employees like their family, community and employers. On the other hand, Park and Shaw, (2013) opined that long working hours have complicated connection with risk, as long working hour strongly influenced through employee control, job, non-work responsibilities and social life abnormalities. The implication of excessive working hours may lead to high level of stress, sleeplessness, limited time for families and other associated personal responsibilities. Excessive working hours may also harmfully affect the human body, disorder, exhaustion, uncomfortable and negative attitude of the employees towards their job role. According to Pierce and Aguinis, (2013), the managers of the organizations may also be negatively affected by the excessive working hours of the employees. Due to long working hours, attrition rate of the employees may be increased and thus, it may lead to delay in production process. When there is delay in production process, the production cost of the organization is increased and therefore, it hampers the actual profitability of the organization. On the other hand, Campbell et al., (2012) opined that the manger also negative influenced by the long working hours of the employees. Due to excessive working hour, employees do not work in the organization eagerly and do not give their best for producing high quality products. In such a situation, lethargy of employees towards their job role lead to cheap and low quality products and services produced in the organization by the employees. The community also influenced by the stunted approach of the employees towards their life in terms of medical errors, industrial mishap and automobile accidents. According to Langley et al., (2013), excessive working hours for the employees, who works for 24 hours at a stretch, may lead to decline in attention, continuous attention and alertness that results in poor diagnosis of diseases. On the other hand, Vaiman et al., (2012) opined that excessive working hours and pressure causes stress of the employees and their neck nerves to be strained due to long sitting in their working areas. According to Purce, (2014), if the employees have to work for long hours at a stretch, it can negatively affect the health of the employees. On the other hand, Storey, (2014) opined that due to long working hours, the employees may feel demotivated in the workplace if the working hours is not compensated by incentives. In order to decrease the demotivation of the employees towards their job role, the higher authority of the organization should properly define the responsibilities of the employees and accordingly provide incentives on the accomplishment of the job. Therefore, if the employers want to make the employees for working for long hours, then the employees should be motivated well through catering their psychological matter and provided with incentives on extra works. In absence of this things, the employees may lose their effectivity and may not perform their job role efficiently through not maintaining their responsibility. According to Jiang et al., (2012), at the time of economic downturn, employers need to facilitate suitable exploitation of resources so that none of the asset is predominantly overburdened. For example, if an organization thinks of retaining only its core employees, then it will be able to restore its financial resources. On the other hand, if an organization tries to reduce its optional expenditures then it will be able to retrain capital for compensating its human resource. This is because if an organization fails to retain its employees at the time of economic downturn, then it will surely fail to allocate best experienced candidates at the time of economic boom. On the other hand, Jiang et al., (2012) argued that for work-life balance, an organization needs to diversify its earning capabilities, so that the effect of national economic doom does not affect the revenue pattern. Therefore, it can be said that the concerned organization needs to ensure international business so that exchange rate increases the earning capability. Finally, it can be said that if an organization is able to retain its revenue at the time of economic downturn, then it will be able to maintain work-life balance. According to Waiganjo et al., (2012), at the time of economic downturn, the unemployment rate increases, as organizations fail to pay a huge human resource. Organizations only try to retain best and experienced candidates so that amount of performance is not reduced with ineffective workers. On the other hand, Park and Shaw, (2013) pointed out that at the time of economic downturn, some multinational organizations try to ensure training and development of its existing employees so that at the time of economic boom, human resource deliver the optimum outcome. Therefore, from the argument it can be said that organizations need to train and develop its human resource at the time of economic downturn, which will in turn ensure how to maintain work-life balance. Employees will get ample training regarding how to maintain work pressure, which will help the organization to retain such human resource during economic boom. According to Nyberg et al., (2014), the main focus for the employers at the time of economic downturn must be employee retention. For such motive, employers need to ensure effective working hours, flexible shift timing and allowance for work-from-home. Campbell et al., (2012) added that employers need not to ensure monetary recognition or financial benefits, but rather needs to give flexibility to its employees. Armstrong, (2014) pointed out that work-life balance at the time economic doom certainly leads to negative business impact, but if the business units are increased, then the amount of collective revenue will remain unaltered. This will lead to work-life balance. Therefore, from the views of the authors it can be said that employers need to entertain employees by good relationship, flexible working hours and special shift timing. It has been quite sure that the most important factor that conceives employers at the time of economic doom is finance. Therefore, if the organizatio ns are able to reduce the financial benefits and focus on work-file balance by flexibility, then it will surely able to retain enormous employees. Conclusion While concluding the study, it can be said that in todays organization, the time and hours of the employees is changing and this quick changes requires flexibility in the work environment for ensuring customer expectation through better product and service produced by the employees. In order to meet the business requirement, individual expectation of the employees should also be met through providing better work life balance. However, it has been found that some organizations are not providing better work-life-balance to the employees and making the employees work for excessive hours. Excessive working hours may have harmful effect on the health and personal life of the employees. Long working hours of employees may also negatively influence the employees through getting cheap and low quality products and service produced by the employees. In case of economic downturn of the organization, the managers of the organization should properly utilize human resources and consider the grieva nces of the employees so that effective and efficient productivity of the employees is maintained.
